SAFE-door Industries Ltd to exhibit at TCS&D 2019

SAFE-door Industries Ltd to exhibit at TCS&D 2019

We are delighted to announce that SAFE-door Industries Ltd will once again be exhibiting Thermaster, the ultimate cold store doorway at the 2019 TCS&D Exhibition & Conference at the East of England Arena, Peterborough on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th June 2019.

A bi-annual exhibition founded in 1981, TCS&D (Temperature Controlled Storage and Distribution) is the only UK trade show dedicated to the temperature-controlled storage and distribution industry.

The Thermaster door is a twin fabric high speed rolling door which operates at speeds of up to 2 metres per second and provides a highly effective seal to all four sides of the opening. The air between the fabrics is conditioned to ensure that an effective thermal barrier is maintained between the two curtains and therefore acts as the insulation. In addition to this, a trace heating system is integrated into the door frame which ensures that the door structure is thermally broken and eliminates any possibility of ice build-up in the door legs or head.

SAFE-door Industries Ltd exhibited at TCS&D for the first time in 2015 and in 2017 also sponsored the "Cold Store Manager of the Year" in the annual TCS&D Awards, which recognise excellence throughout the perishable supply chain.

This year we are proud to be sponsoring the "Cold Store Team of the Year" award which will take place on the evening of the first day of the show. Nominations for this award and the other award categories can be made at tcsdawards.com/nominate-now prior to the closing date of Wednesday 25th March 2019.

Further updates will be issued in due course; in the meantime please book Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th June into your diaries to meet the SAFE-door Industries Ltd team at #TCSD19

Soundroll 53 acoustic rolling door installed at Royal Opera House Muscat, Oman

SAFE-door Industries Ltd recently helped the Royal Opera House Muscat soundproof their newly built supplementary theatre facilities with the installation of an innovative Soundroll 53 high performance acoustic tandem roller shutter door system to the stage lobby. The Soundroll 53 performs at both high and low frequencies, delivering the onerous acoustic requirements of the project.

Due to the challenge of limited head and side room around the opening, the project architects chose to specify the modern and compact Soundroll 53 high-attenuation rolling door instead of a more traditional and much more expensive solid-panel sliding acoustic door.

Utilising their experience from working on similar high-profile stage door projects such as the Greek National Opera House in Athens and the Victoria Palace Theatre in London, the SAFE-door Industries Ltd engineering team were able to turn the site-specific drawings around quickly, before constructing the door to the client’s requirements at their UK works in Brampton, Cumbria and shipping the door by sea to meet the tight project deadlines.

SAFE-door Industries Ltd flew a fully qualified installation engineer to Oman to supervise the client’s local workers with the installation of the door. Due to the efficient design of the door system and the hard work of all involved, this was accomplished in just three days site time.

The Soundroll range of acoustic roller shutters have independently tested acoustic performances of Rw30dB, Rw31dB and Rw53dB and operate quickly at an average speed of up to 150mm/sec. The Soundroll 31 and Soundroll 53 can also be specified with fire resistance properties up to 60 minutes to EN 1634-1.

All three Soundroll models feature a wind end locked curtain to ensure a wind load category of Class 5 (1250Pa) and are available in a natural galvanised steel finish, or in a wide range of polyester powder coat RAL colours to suit the client’s application.

Thermaster replacement frozen loading pod doors for Birds Eye Lowestoft

This 3 dock loading bay in Birds Eye’s -22degC cold store was previously equipped with solid panel vertical lifting cold store doors to the dock shelters, and suffered from significant ice and snow build-up on the floor, walls and ceiling, as shown in the image below.

Following a competitive tendering process involving three rapid roll door manufacturers, Thermaster high speed freezer doors from SAFE-door Industries Ltd were selected as part of an upgrade project to the Lowestoft facility.

Soundroll acoustic roller shutters

The Thermaster twin curtain rapid rise freezer door opens and closes at up to two metres per second and provides a highly efficient seal to all four sides of the opening. The air between the fabrics is conditioned to ensure that an effective thermal barrier is maintained between the two curtains, and therefore acts as the insulation separating the -22degC cold store from the ambient loading pod. In addition to this, a trace heating system is integrated into the door frame which ensures that the door structure is thermally broken and eliminates any possibility of ice build-up in the door legs or head.

Since the initial batch of doors was installed, the Birds Eye engineering team were quickly impressed with the performance of the doors, and how they assisted with the clearance of ice and snow in the store, as shown in the image above. Birds Eye have since ordered additional Thermaster and Thermaspeed doors for their raw production freezers and airlocks.

Thermal Solutions from SAFE-door Industries Ltd for East Anglian poultry producer

SAFE-door Industries Ltd have recently completed the installation of 9 no. high-speed temperature-controlled doors from the Thermal Solutions family at the home of a well-known poultry producer in East Anglia, who were expanding their operations with the creation of an on-site distribution centre and associated storage facilities.

The high-speed range of Thermal Solutions by SAFE-door Industries Ltd is headed by the twin-curtain Thermaster, the ultimate cold store doorway, for sub-zero applications. The Thermachill (with its heavily insulated single curtain) is the natural choice for high-traffic chill environments, and the Thermaspeed completes the family of rapid-action Thermal Solutions for less demanding chill or ambient applications.

All three rapid-rise doors in the Thermal Solutions family share common features, including opening and closing speeds of up to two metres per second, self-repairing bottom beams, and IP65 self-monitoring light guards for extra safety. SAFE-door Industries Ltd manufacture the Thermal Solutions and Sound Solutions doors at their UK works in Brampton, Cumbria.

The East Anglian poultry producer’s new-build distribution and storage operation required a number of freezer, chill and ambient doors of the highest standard to ensure that their new facility ran as efficiently as possible. SAFE-door Industries Ltd were awarded the specialist rapid roll doors contract following a competitive tendering process against a number of competitors, and the availability of vision panels providing additional safety as well as the flexibility of colour choices for frames and curtains were highlighted as key benefits over doors from other suppliers.

The adaptability of the Thermal Solutions design was further demonstrated when the client requested to change the activation method from embedded induction loops in the floors to a combination of pull cords, motion detectors and infra-red remote controls. This line-of-sight system enables the operation of multiple doors with a simple one-button handset. With the flexibility of activation options built-in to each door’s controller as standard, all that was required was a change to the hardware supplied, quick on-site programming, and the doors worked to the new specification.

SAFE-door Industries Ltd design, manufacture and install their temperature-control doors both in the UK and in a growing number of overseas countries.

Soundroll acoustic roller shutters for Ealing Studios, London, UK

SAFE-door Industries Ltd have recently completed the installation of another Soundroll acoustic roller shutter, this time at Ealing Studios in London, UK.

As the existing twin vertical lift acoustic doors had reached the end of their serviceable life, the Soundroll 30 acoustic roller shutter from SAFE-door Industries Ltd proved the most straightforward and affordable solution for the replacement external stage access.

This alternative rolling door type ensured the same high sound quality on the recording stage, following a speedy installation by SAFE-door Industries Ltd’s highly skilled installation team.

A bespoke canopy was required due to fixed steelwork supporting an overhead walkway which could not be moved, however this was no problem for the SAFE-door Industries Ltd engineering team or for the adaptable Soundroll design.

The Soundroll range of acoustic roller shutters is available with tested performance of Rw30dB, Rw31dB (with an optional 60 minute Fire Rating) and a tandem model Soundroll 53 offering attenuation of Rw53dB (also available with an optional 60 minute Fire Rating).

Thermaster – Yearsley Belle Eau Park Loading Pod

Yet Another Tall Order For SAFE-door Industries Ltd

SAFE-door Industries Ltd, in conjunction with sister companies Emirates Industrial Panel, Polar Specialized Industries and ADEAREST, have recently completed the installation of some rather tall high speed doors from the Thermal Solutions product range at a customer site in the United Arab Emirates.

Traditional frozen storage to loading dock solutions utilise solid panel sliding doors which are generally open for the duration of the loading or unloading process, typically up to 60 minutes. Whilst the door is open the only separation between the frozen storage chamber and the outside world is a set of dock seals which may at best offer a little resistance to the exfiltration air.

thermaster thermal doors

All SAFE-door Industries doors are designed and built to the customer’s precise requirements at their UK manufacturing facility in Brampton, Cumbria. The height of these extra-tall high speed doors meant making some minor changes to the production and testing procedures however this was all managed successfully by the design and engineering departments.

All three models of high speed door in the Thermal Solutions range from SAFE-door Industries share a number of innovative common features. Opening and closing speeds of up to 2.0 metres per second ensures that the opportunity for warm moist air to enter the frozen or chilled area is much reduced compared with a traditional sliding door. This also results in reduced plant running costs as the workload is lowered and defrosts are required less often.

SAFE-door Industries also supplied a number of their Thermasec sectional cold room doors for areas of the facility that had less frequent levels of reach truck traffic. Demonstrating the flexibility of the engineering solution, some of the Thermasec doors were of the common up-and-over design, while the remainder were of a dual counterweight vertical-lift design that opened high into the tall cold store facility.

Soundroll acoustic roller shutters add to the atmosphere at Ice Arena Wales

SAFE-door Industries Ltd have recently completed the installation of three Soundroll 31 acoustic roller shutters at the new home of the Cardiff Devils ice hockey team, Ice Arena Wales – part of the Cardiff International Sports Village in Cardiff, Wales. The main contractor on the £17m project was Kier Construction and the architect was Scott Brownrigg.

Ice Arena Wales houses two ice rinks and seats more than 3,000 spectators. The three Soundroll 31 acoustic roller shutters are located around the shared ice resurfacer (Zamboni) garage, and they isolate the ice rinks from each other and from the rest of the building.

Ice Arena Wales

The Kier Construction Project Manager commented that SAFE-door Industries Ltd were “very proactive and helpful” and described the completed project as “a very successful installation.”

Following commissioning, the General Manager of Ice Arena Wales stated that “Since the doors have been installed they have had no problems. There have been no issues with sound levels throughout the building, even when a hockey game is on, and that is when the arenas are at their loudest.”

The Soundroll range of acoustic roller shutters from SAFE-door Industries Ltd are manufactured at the company’s factory in Brampton, Cumbria and have a number of useful features. With tested acoustic performance of Rw30dB, Rw31dB and Rw53dB, the three models in Soundroll range operate quickly at an average speed of up to 150mm/sec. Soundroll 31 and Soundroll 53 can also be specified with fire resistance properties up to 60 minutes to EN 1634-1.

YEARSLEY LOGISTICS INVESTS IN HEALTH & SAFETY

Yearsley Logistics have recently installed more Thermaster high speed freezer doors from SAFE-door Industries Ltd at their Belle Eau Park cold store, enhancing health and safety due to the lack of ice and snow on the cold store walls and floors.

However, in most instances there is clear daylight either above the truck or at the side of the dock leveller, perfect positions for warm moist air to sweep in and for cold dense drier air to fall out. Given that these gaps will remain as flow paths until the inner door is closed after the process has completed, it is easy to imagine the volume of cold air lost from the cold store and the volume of warm moist air that has been allowed to enter.

It is this warm moist air entering the cold store which freezes to form ice and snow on walls and floors, creating a very real safety hazard for slips and falls to potentially happen. And as well as health and safety, there is also the store temperature variance to think about – the influx of warm moist air creates additional load on refrigeration plant to regulate the store temperature.

To overcome this, the Thermaster from SAFE-door Industries takes the place of the solid panel doors and allows the loading or unloading process to be undertaken in the same time but with the open-door period reduced typically by a factor of 10, meaning much less warm moist air entering the store. This means less ice and snow build up and lower loads on the refrigeration plant.

For additional safety, the Thermaster is fitted as standard with 2.5 metre high self-monitoring light guards to both sides of the opening, which ensures that there is no possibility of a closing door striking an object. Manufactured from heavy duty galvanised steel and polyester powdercoated as standard, the Thermaster is built to last and engineered to minimise maintenance needs.

Yearsley Logistics have installed more than 30 Thermaster doors from SAFE-door Industries across a number of their sites throughout the UK, and the improvements to health and safety, fridge plant load and defrost cycles have been welcomed by all.

Industrial door manufacturers

We all know what a door is, and we all go through several of them virtually every day of our lives. Most of these doors though, unless we live or work in a special or unusual environment, are what we might call “standard”, that is, usually made of wood, with a typical door handle, connecting two rooms or to the outside world. There’s not normally a great deal more to say about them!

There are, however, some situations where a specialised door is required i.e. one with particular functionality. Fire doors are an obvious example. There are also some environments where a specialised door is absolutely necessary, either for regulatory/legal reasons and/or to perform a particular function, good examples being soundproof and insulated doors (which we’ll take a quick look at later on).

This is where industrial door manufacturers come in. These manufacturers specialise in the design, manufacture, supply, service and repair of special purpose doors whilst maintaining full compliance with all safety, environmental and statutory requirements.

So, essentially, any door that could be considered “non-standard” – and certainly most doors in non-domestic (i.e. commercial and public) buildings – probably require the expertise of an industrial door manufacturer to ensure that the door meets the desired specification.

Commercial sectors for industrial door manufacturers

There are numerous sectors where specialist doors are required: any building that needs a fire door; schools; hospitals; libraries; government buildings; theatres; museums; conference centres; power plants; manufacturing sites; distribution centres; retail outlets … the list is virtually endless.

Let’s now take a very quick look at two types of specialist doors.

Soundproof doors

When would we need a soundproof door? Leaving aside sounds that are simply irritating, some sounds can interfere with activities or are so dangerously loud that they can cause permanent irreversible hearing damage. A good example of where the former would be a problem would be in a recording studio, where in that particular industry, the recording artists don’t want any outside sounds corrupting the recording.

Thermal Insulated doors

Defining insulation as “material that retards or prevents the progression or transmission of electricity, heat, moisture, shock, or sound from one item or medium to another”, there are several environments where industrial insulating doors would be required. Here at Safe Door Industries, we provide industrial thermal doors that insulate separate ambient temperature areas from frozen or chilled areas. An example of the usage of one of our thermal doors would be in an industry where temperate control is critical and an insulated door protecting against hotter or colder temperatures is essential for operations, such as in a distribution centre for food or pharmaceutical items.

Industrial insulated doors

What are they and what are they used for? We’ll begin this article with a discussion on the importance of insulation, considering the role that industrial insulated doors play and the R-value, before going on to look at some specific examples of where they are used.

The importance of insulation

Virtually every building can benefit from some kind of insulation, but it becomes crucial in industrial facilities for a variety of reasons. Manufacturing plants, for example, generate quantities of heat and noise – not to mention in some instances pollutants – that can be hazardous both to employees and also to the surrounding environment.

There’s also the issue of energy efficiency – energy consumption is an expensive business, and anything that can be done to reduce operating costs is of course welcome.

Thermodynamics tells us that heat will inevitably and always gravitate towards a cooler environment; thus areas that need to be hot will get cooler and conversely areas that need to be cold will get warmer. Insulation can minimise and in some cases virtually eliminate the heat (thermal) flow, providing effective climate control.

One more thing. Fire safety. Thermal door solutions can also provide protection against the spread of fire and smoke (the latter being the bigger killer) in the event of a fire breaking out.

Thermal values and the R-value

It may be necessary to have objective measurements of thermal resistance. The Lambda Value λ(w/mK) is the value of the insulating capacity of a product designed for thermal performance. For example, glass mineral wool loft roll comes in at 0.044w/mK. The lower the value, the better the insulating capacity of the product (for a given thickness). Combining the Lambda Value λ with the product’s thickness gives us the thermal resistance – or R-value – of each element in a structure. It equates to Thickness / λ, so that the higher the R value of any element, the better its ability to resist the transmission of heat.

The importance of climate control

As mentioned above, climate control is all about protecting the integrity of a particular environment, thermally or otherwise. Its importance can’t be over-stated, particularly when we consider that thermal cycling, condensate formation, and dust are the three biggest causes of failure in electrical enclosures.

Thermal insulated doors have a key role to play

Assuming that people and “things” will need periodically need to move in and out of any environment we are trying to keep insulated, the door through which they move can be considered a point of weakness. Therefore it is essential that the door itself becomes an integral component of the insulation system.

Example usage of industrial insulated doors
  • Distribution Centres
  • Cold Storage Facilities
  • Laboratories
  • Food Manufacturing Plants
  • Pharmaceutical Facilities

The list goes on – essentially any environment where insulation is critical. The harsher the environment – and the worse the consequences if the insulation fails – the more important the insulated doors become.

New Thermaspeed installation

Rick Bestwick North Ltd, part of the Magnavale Group, have installed three Thermaspeed doors from SAFE-door Industries Ltd at their temperature-controlled site in Scunthorpe earlier this year, and are already benefiting from significant energy savings.

The doors previously fitted had reached the end of their working life, and were allowing air chilled at +2degC to escape the chamber, and warm air from the ambient loading bay to enter. This meant that the plant was working harder than necessary and consuming additional electricity. Since the new Thermaspeeds were installed by SAFE-door Industries Ltd, this plant requirement has reduced, as have Rick Bestwick’s energy bills!

Custom made to fit the openings, the Thermaspeed rapid-roll door has a number of benefits over similar doors on the market. The galvanised steel support frame is polyester powder coated as standard ensuring a long lasting finish, and a full width roller canopy is fitted to protect the door curtain.

For safety, a retro-reflective optical beam is fitted across the width of the door and a conductive rubber wirelessly connected self-monitoring safety edge is fitted across the bottom beam. In addition, the bottom 600mm of the door is constructed so that should the bottom beam be struck by a vehicle and displaced from the side guides, the displaced curtain and beam is automatically fed back into the guides on the next opening cycle.

Engineering and Procurement Director of Magnavale Ltd, Jonathan Gagg, had the following to say:

I am delighted with the installation of the Thermaspeed doors from SAFE-door Industries and how they are helping Rick Bestwick Scunthorpe to save energy. I would be happy to recommend SAFE-door Industries’ range of Thermal Solutions to anyone in the temperature-controlled industry.

Special Delivery

SAFE-door Industries Ltd utilised specialist haulage and lifting equipment to deliver large Soundslide door panels. The wagon loaded the first three of six doors at the Brampton works and travelled through the night to the new studios of a well-known soap opera in Manchester.

On arrival at site next day the remotely controlled Hiab crane carefully lifted each panel into position for the SAFE-door Industries installation team to suspend each panel onto its preinstalled door track. The method minimises risk by eliminating multiple handling and lifting by fork lift truck.
